Randolph Milton was born on 15 July 1851 at Stoke Damerel, Devon. He joined the service as Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. RAPID on 20 June 1866 until paid off as an Ordinary Seaman in September 1871. Drafted to H.M.S. RINGDOVE on 1 February 1873 where he was advanced to Able Seaman in March 1876 and paid off in April 1877. Ultimately pensioned as an A.B. from H.M.S. VALOROUS on 29 August 1889 without his L.S. & G.C. award since, during his career, he had managed to be deprived of good conduct badges on five separate occasions, incurring also time in cells for each misdemeanour.
