John Frampton was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire on 12 October 1847. He first entered as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. WARRIOR on 29 September 1862, being advanced to Boy 1st Class in October 1864, just one month before being drafted to H.M.S. LIFFEY (1864-65). Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships WOLVERINE (1865-66) being advanced to Ord in July 1866, DUNCAN (1866-67), IRRESISTIBLE (1867-68), HECTOR (1868-69) and, as an A.B. to ROYAL ALFRED (1869 - Jan 1874). Advanced to Ship's Corporal 2nd Class in June 1874 whilst aboard H.M.S. CURLEW (1874-76) and joined BOADICEA for her four year commission (1878-82) in November 1878, where he received advancement to Ship's Corporal 1st Class on 1 July 1879. Pensioned from H.M.S. DUKE OF WELLINGTON on 25 October 1885 but was never awarded the LS & GC medal.
