Richard Edwards was born in Portsea, Hants on 20 November 1851. He joined the service as Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. BLANCHE on 17 October 1866, receiving advancement to Ord on his eighteenth birthday and to A.B. in October 1870 before being paid off on 21 December 1871. Drafted to H.M.S.ACTIVE as Captain of Fore Top (P.O. 2nd Class) in July 1877, rising to P.O. 1st Class as Coxswain of Launch in April 1878 - remaining aboard until October 1879. For misconduct he was deprived of his three Good Conduct Badges in February 1883 and for further misdemeanours disrated to A.B. in November 1883. Thereafter he behaved himself and was finally pensioned as a P.O. 1st Class (Bosun's Mate] on 28 October 1889. He was never awarded a L.S. & G.C. medal.
