Thomas Griffin was born on 2 August 1858 at Bilston, Staffordshire. He enlisted in Chatham Division on 2 May 1876 and was drafted to H.M.S.FORESTER for the period 15 January 1878 until 30 November 1879. His only other time afloat was aboard H.M.S.TERROR for two years commencing March 1889. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal after 15 years service on 30 June 1891, and received his only promotion, to Lance Corporal, just four months prior to his discharge on 4 August 1897.
