The abbreviated title on the edge of his medal is incorrectly spelt, he was a Lamptrimmer, not a Lamplighter, which was never a ‘rate’ in the Royal Navy.

George Walker was born in Sheerness, Kent on 6 May 1858. He first entered the service as a Lamptrimmer aboard H.M.S. DUKE OF WELLINGTON on 2 December 1876, and transferred five days later to H.M.S. EUPHRATES until drafted from her in May 1880. He served next aboard H.M.S. INCONSTANT (1880-82) and almost immediately was discharged to shore, ending his service career, whilst aboard H.M.S. DUKE OF WELLINGTON, still a lamptrimmer, on 14 September 1882.
