Daniel Reynolds was born in Portsmouth on 10 February l 845 and joined the service as Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. NILE on 1 January 1861. Advanced to Ord in September 1865, to A.B. in November 1865 aboard H.M.S. CUMBERLAND, but subsequently bought himself out of naval service. He paid twelve pounds to obtain his discharge by purchase on 20 July 1869 whilst an A.B. aboard H.M.S. OBERON. Finding that the grass was not greener in ‘civvy street’, he re-engaged when presenting himself aboard H.M.S. RACOON on 3 January 1870 and sought some recompense. He was reimbursed to the amount of four pounds in accordance with the regulations which allowed a man who “re-engaged within 6 months of purchasing his discharge, having served 5 to l 0 years adult time, as entitled to a refund of one third of the price he had paid to purchase his discharge.” Whilst aboard RACOON he was advanced to Leading Seaman in June 1871, and to Captain of Mizzen Top in October 1872. He received his L.S. & G.C. medal in July 1875 after serving only eleven years, as allowed by the recently introduced rules which had reduced eligibility from twenty years to ten years. He joined H.M.S.TENEDOS as a Petty Officer 1st Class on 28 March 1878, thereafter being drafted to H.M. Ships ACTIVE (February 1879), BOADICEA (March 1879) and returned to TENEDOS in May 1879. He was paid off in December 1882, and pensioned on 12 May 1885.
