Edmund Bate was born in St Germans, Cornwall, on 7 January 1863. He first entered as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPLACABLE on 16 May 1879, and joined HECTOR as a Boy 1st Class on 11 November 1880, where he was advanced to Ord in January 1881. Drafted to H.M.S. BITTERN on 8 November 1881, receiving advancement to A.B. in May 1882. He died on 10 July 1885 whilst taking passage back to England from BITTERN in the Mediterranean.
