Frederick Wise was born on 7 December 1850 and first entered as a Temporary Assistant Engineer aboard H.M.S. PEMBROKE on 25 June 1878. Subsequently served in the following H.M. Ships, MINOTAUR (1878-81) where he received promotion to Temporary Engineer, MONARCH (1881-86) receiving the permanent rank of Engineer in May 1886. Followed by service aboard HOTSPUR for duty aboard FIREFLY (1887-90), FIREBRAND (1891-94) and TYNE (1896-99). He retired on 1 January 1901 and died on 15 September 1903.
