Charles Fryer was born in Hove, Sussex, on 29 January 1854. First entered as a Boy 1st Class aboard H.M.S. HECTOR on 11 January 1872, becoming an Ord 2nd Class in February 1873, one month before being drafted from her. On 1st December 1873, whilst aboard H.M.S. SPITEFUL (1873-77) his request to join the Engineering Branch was approved, and he was made a Stoker. He subsequently served in this rate aboard H.M. Ships ASIA (1877-79), LORD WARDEN (1879-80) and INVINCIBLE (1882-85). He was deprived of one Good Conduct Badge in 1884, which appears to have lost him his chance of earning a L.S. & G.C. medal. Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships VERNON (1886-88) and ALEXANDRA (1891-92) where he was pensioned to shore on 28 February 1892.
