Charles Coster was born on 6 December 1842 at Portsmouth. After serving as a Royal Marine in the Portsmouth Division he was entered as a Bandsman aboard H.M.S. DUKE OF WELLINGTON on 19 July 1878, and drafted to H.M.S. SULTAN on 4 May 1882 where he earned his L.S. & G.C. medal on 25 September 1885. No discharge details appear on his papers, but it is most probable he left the service in 1886 since the latest date on his service documents is “V.G. 31-12-1885”.
