James Maling joined the service as an Assistant ngineer Second Class aboard H.M.S. ROYAL OAK on 28 January 1868, and was promoted to Asst Engineer First Class on 3 May 1871. He subsequently served aboard VALIANT from 1 January 1873, being promoted Engineer on 3 June 1874, leaving her a few months later. He served a few months aboard SHAH, April to September 1877, serving as one of the Engineer Officers when she was in action against the Peruvian rebel turret ship HUASCAR, off the town of Ylo on 29th May 1877. He was hospitalised in Jamaica during March 1876, in Esquimalt during September 1877 and twice at Haslar Hospital in September 1880 and March 1881. He served aboard H.M. Ships HECTOR (1878-80), INVINCIBLE (1882-85) - loaned to DEE (June 1882) - and SHANNON (1887-91). He was retired as an Engineer whilst aboard TAMAR on 20 April 1892.
