William Haynes was born at Torpoint, Cornwall, on 20 April 1858. He first entered the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPREGNABLE on 30 April 1873, and served next aboard MINOTAUR as a Boy 1st Class (1875-79) where he was advanced to A.B. during April 1877. Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships CAMBRIDGE (1879-81), FALCON (1881-84) where he was advanced to Leading Seaman in February 1883 and to Petty Officer 2nd Class in February 1884, CAMBRIDGE (1885-86) where he received advancement to P.O. 1st Class (Captain of Main Top) during October 1885 and the award of his L.S. & G.C. medal on 16 June 1886. Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships ROYAL ADELAIDE (1886-88) and CONQUEST (1889-92). Pensioned to shore and became a member of the R.F.R. during April 1901 but was discharged from R.F.R. due to his age on 20 April 1908.
