John Knight was born in Stamford, Northants, on 17 July 1857. He first entered at Walmer as a Private R.M. of Number 3 Company on 17 January 1877 and served aboard H.M.S. DRAGON (1879-82) earning his Egypt award. Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships DEFIANCE (1889-90), HIMALAYA (1891-94) and CAMBRIDGE (1897-98). Discharged to shore after 21 years length of service on 19 January 1898.
