Henry Hoskins was born in Bridport, Dorset, on 7 February 1843. He entered as a Boy 1st Class aboard BRITANNIA on 27 January 1859, and drafted to TRAFALGAR in September 1859 as an Ord 2nd Class, advanced to Ord in March 1862 and to Able Seaman a month later. He then served aboard MEEANE (1862-66), receiving advancement to Leading Seaman in September 1864 and to Petty Officer 2nd Class (2nd Captain of Fore Top) in January 1866. Whilst aboard VALOROUS (1869-71) he became P.O.1st Class as Captain of Mizzen Top and then of the Fore Top, and during his next draft to PENELOPE (1872-74) he served as a Gunner's Mate. Promoted to Boatswain R.N. on 6 February 1877 to serve aboard PEMBROKE (1877-79) and then ECLIPSE (1880-83), followed by DUNCAN (1883-87), IMPERIEUSE (1891-94) and finally was pensioned on reaching the age of fifty five years whilst on the books of H.M.S. PEMBROKE on 24 February 1898.
