Tom Bennett was born in Landport, Hants, on 18 April 1851. He first entered as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard ASIA, 17 April 1882, and was then drafted to ORONTES (1882-83) being advanced to Stoker in November 1882. Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships WOODLARK (1884-87), DEVASTATION (1887-89) where he was advanced to Leading Stoker in December 1889, ASIA (1889-90). Whilst aboard H.M.S. VICTORY as a Leading Stoker 1st Class he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal on 9 July 1892. Received further advancement to Leading Stoker 1st Class in April 1893. He then served aboard H.M.S. NILE (1894-98), where he achieved the rate of Chief Stoker in October 1897, followed by service aboard the DUKE OF WELLINGTON (1902-03). He was pensioned on 17 May 1902, but remained in the service with the reduced rate of Stoker (Pensioner) until 4 February 1903 when he was discharged to shore. Joined the Royal Fleet Reserve in May 1902, and discharged due to age on 17 April 1911.
