James Prior was born in Bodmin, Cornwall, on 10 October 1859. He first entered as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. INDUS on 6 September 1880, then to BELLEISLE (1881-82) where he was advanced to Stoker during July 1881. For the Egypt Campaign he served aboard H.M.S. THALIA from 26 July 1882 until 13 December 1882. Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships INDUS (1882-85), WRANGLER (1885-89) and was advanced to Leading Stoker whilst aboard INDUS during July 1889. Joined HMS AJAX in 1890 and advanced to Leading Stoker on 16 March 1891. He served next aboard SIRIUS (1892-95) where he attained the rate of Leading Stoker 1st Class in April 1893, and that of Chief Stoker during December 1894. His last vessel was H.M.S. PHEASANT (1897-1900), and he was pensioned to shore on 21 January 1901. He was a member of the Royal Fleet Reserve from April 1903 until discharged on age in October 1909.
