William Taylor was born in Hot Wells, Bristol, on 28 April 1857. First entered as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. BOSCAWEN on 23 July 1872 until September 1873, where he was advanced to Boy 1st Class during August 1873. After being advanced to Ord in April 1875 he was drafted to H.M.S. RESEARCH (1875-79), where he was advanced to A.B. during July 1879, then to SULTAN (20 April 1882 until 22 November 1883), COQUETTE (1885-86), and COLOSSUS (1887-90) being advanced to Leading Seaman in March 1889. Transferred to service in H.M. Coast Guard as a Boatman (1890-92), from which service he was returned to ‘service afloat’ due to misconduct. He next served as an Able Seaman aboard H.M.S. EDGAR (1893-95) and was pensioned to shore from PEMBROKE on 30 June 1895. Sold with original parchment Certificate of Service which shows his alias as James Alan Taylor.
