John Chown was born in Honiton, Devon, during September 1856. He joined the Royal Marines as an Infantry Supernumerary on 24 February 1875, and was transferred to Number 4 Company R.M. on 4 February 1876 to serve aboard PELICAN (1877-82). Transferred to the R.M. Battalion, Mediterranean (30 June to 17 October 1882) earning his Egyptian medal and Tel-el-Kebir clasp. He next served aboard INFLEXIBLE (1882-84). Placed on the books of H.M.S. EURYALUS for the R.M. Battalion (8 February to 15 April 1884) for his two additional clasps (Suakin 1884 and El Teb Tamaai). Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships INFLEXIBLE (1884-85), LEANDER (1885-89), NORTHUMBERLAND (1890-91), ALEXANDRA (1891-92). He was pensioned and discharged to shore on completion of 21 years service on 24 February 1896. Joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 9 March 1901, from whence he was discharged on reaching the age limit of 50 years on 24 September 1906. He had one minor misdemeanour in 1888, and whilst logged as being "Very Good" for every other year he did not receive the L.S. & G.C. medal.
