Philip Brown was born in Bigbury, Devon, on 13 January 1853. First entered as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. VOLAGE (1869-72) on 8 July 1869, advanced to Boy 1st Class during July 1870 and to Ord in August 1871. Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships ROYAL ADELAIDE (1872-74), VALIANT where he was advanced to A.B. in April 1875, CAMBRIDGE (1875-77) and AGINCOURT (1877-79). He was then drafted to ARAB (1881-85) earning this Soudan award. His last two Commissions were aboard H.M. Ships GRIFFON (1887-88) and TRIUMPH (1890-91). He was pensioned to shore on 2 March 1891.
