William Morey was born in West Cowes, Isle of Wight, on 26 July 1853. He entered as a Skilled Shipwright aboard H.M.S. ASIA on 1 October 1880, and drafted to H.M.S. RANGER (1880-84) to earn this campaign award. He was not signed on for any particular period, and was discharged from the service on 3 October 1884.
