George Robertson was born in Dundee, Forfarshire, on 6 June 1860. He first entered as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. ST VINCENT on 14 December 1875, where he was advanced to Boy 1st Class on 17 January 1877. Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships LORD WARDEN (1877-78), and made an Ord aboard DUKE OF WELLINGTON during June 1878, CROCODILE (1879-81) where he was advanced to A.B. in May 1881, LONDON (1882-83), EURYALUS (1883-85) earning his Egypt campaign award, and MONARCH (1887-88) where he was made a Leading Seaman during December 1887. He was discharged from the service having completed his first term of engagement on 11 June 1888. He lost one Good Conduct Badge on two occasions, and was noted as “not sufficiently of good character to be made a Seaman Gunner”. Many years later joined the R.F.R. on 17 August 1902 for five years.
