William Mortimore was born in North Bovey, Mortenhampstead, Devon, on 30 November 1853. He joined the Marines after being a labourer in civilian life, on 30 May 1872 at Walmer, and drafted into Number 43 Company. Sunsequently served aboard the following Ships: TRIUMPH (1874-77), IMPREGNABLE (1878-80), BRITON (1881-84) earning his Egypt award, DEFIANCE (1890-91), GANGES (1892-93) and finally discharged after completion of 21 years service on 2 June 1893. During his career he had lost one G.C.B. on three occasions, hence no L.S. & G.C.
