Alfred Cleall was born in Southsea, Hampshire, on 2 January 1849. He first entered as Armourer's Crew aboard H.M.S. WATERWITCH on 10 July 1867 and subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships MINOTAUR (1868-70), MAGPIE (1870-73), EXCELLENT (1874-75) where he was advanced to Armourer during October 1874, DEVASTATION (1875-77), HECTOR (1878-79), NORTHAMPTON (1879-82) where he was reduced in rate to Armourer's Crew and lost a G.C.B., EXCELLENT (1882-83) regaining his rate of Armourer during October 1883. He earned his Egypt award aboard H.M.S SPHINX (10 October 1883 to 5 December 1884). Invalided to shore on 5 February 1891 and having lost one Good Conduct Badge on four occasions during his career, lost any chance of a L.S. & G.C. medal.
