A Naval Brigade of four officers and 55 men, under Lord Charles Beresford, were present at Abu Klea. Two officers and six men were killed in action, and seven men, including Stoker Moore, were wounded.

Charles Moore was born in Gosport, Hants, on 25 August 1861. He first entered as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. ASIA on 24 August 1880, and subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships ASSISTENCE (1880-81), ASIA (1881-82) where he was advanced to Stoker during May 1881, MONARCH (1882-84) and again on the Books of MONARCH for “Nile Flotilla: (1 October 1884 to 15 October 1885), POLYPHEMUS (1885-87), VERNON (1887-89), ANSON (1889-93), VERNON (1895-98), ORLANDO (1899 to May 1900), UNDAUNTED (21 May 1900 to 3 August 1900). He was pensioned to shore on 15 January 1901, but re-entered the service as a Stoker (Pensioner) for the period September 1901 to 31 March 1903. He had joined the R.F.R. on 12 November 1901, but died on 4 July 1909 before being discharged by age limit. During his service career he had been sent to cells on three occasions (1880-90) and lost a G.C.B. in 1900, hence not eligible for a L.S. & G.C. award.
