George Clarke was born in Dublin during 1847, the son of Captain G. H. Clarke R.N. who earned medals for Syria and the Baltic. He certified as an ‘Ordinary Master’ (No 04664) on 18 April 1877 in command of MAY QUEEN on UK coastal trade. After being Master of CULNA and ARCOT he was Commissioned as a Sub Lieutenant R.N.R. on 4 September 1880 (No 00170). Commanded the Transport BULIMBA for most of the period 1883 to 1887, during which time he was involved in military operations at Suakin in 1885 and in Burma, 1886-87. He commanded H.M. Steam Tender PROMPT at Suakin during the operations of 1885 in the Eastern Soudan. For his valuable services aboard BULIMBA and PROMPT the Admiralty specially promoted him to Lieutenant R.N.R. on 3 December 1885, after he had made up his ‘Drill Time’ aboard H.M.S. CARYSFORT during August and September 1885. He retired as Commander R.N.R. in 15 June 1896 and became a Younger Brother of Trinity House in 1900. This is the only Egypt medal issued to the Tug PROMPT.
