William Stone was born in Devoport, Devon, on 4 December 1849. He first entered as an Acting Engine Room Artificer aboard H.M.S. INDUS on 28 December 1870, and was drafted to COCKATRICE (1872-75) as an Acting E.R.A. on 29 April 1872, confirmed as an E.R.A. on 1 April 1873. Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships TRIUMPH (1875-77), was advanced to Chief E.R.A. aboard TOPAZE on 21 July 1877, PENGUIN (1877-81), WASP (1881-84), ALBACORE (14 February 1884 to 8 June 1887), NEPTUNE (1890-93) and EDGAR (1893-95). He was finally pensioned to shore on 31 December 1895.
