Born in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, on 6 September 1848, Richard West attested at Walmer on 6 October 1872 aged 24 years. He saw service in the following Ships ARIADNE (1872-73), LORD WARDEN (1874-75), HERCULES (1875-77), ST VINCENT (1877-80), and was a member of the R.M. Battalion, Egypt, 16 September 1884 until 16 May 1885. He was awarded hisL.S. & G.C. medal whilst within the Portsmouth Division on 18 May 1888. His last vessel was H.M.S. AUSTRALIA (1889-91) prior to being pensioned to shore on 7 October 1891.
