Thomas Bennett was born in Gillingham, Kent, on 13 June 1864. He first entered as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. BOSCAWEN on 21 December 1879 until February 1881. Advanced to Boy 1st Class in June 1881, and subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships DEFENCE (1882-84) where advanced to Ord in June 1882 and to A.B. during October 1884, EXPRESS (1884-86), and to RACER (1886- 89) where he earned this Egypt medal. He left the service after his first ten year contract from H.M.S. INVINCIBLE on 29 June 1896.
