Born Exeter, Devon on 30 January 1853. Enlisted in the Plymouth Division on 30 September 1871, and served aboard H.M. Ships BLANCHE (1873-75) and BELLEISLE (1880-81), during this time receiving promotion to Corporal in March 1876 and to Sergeant on New Year's Day 1877. Formed part of the Royal Marine Battalion sent to Egypt in February 1884 - promoted to Colour Sergeant on 5th July 1884 - but was invalided and sent home from Suakin in December 1884. His last time afloat was aboard H.M.S. TERROR (1885-88). He was awarded his LS & GC medal, somewhat later than most with nearly 18 years service, on 11 April 1889, and subsequently pensioned to shore on 6 Janaury 1893. Annuity commenced 19 May 1920.
