Awarded 10 July 1844.
His entered the Royal Navy rather late in his seafaring career, joining H.M.S. HASTY on 13 April 1822, aged 28 years, born Chatham. His past experience with the trade of the sea allowed immediate advancement to Able Seaman. Within three years he was a Captain of the Fore Top, serving later in this Rate aboard H.M.S. RATTLESNAKE in the action against Greek pirate vessels at Grabusa on 31 January 1828, when H.M.S. CAMBRIAN was wrecked. After being pensioned, he served a further three years as a Seaman Rigger in Woolwich Yard, thus enhancing his naval pension. He was awarded the N.G.S. medal for Syria, when serving as Captain of the Mast aboard H.M.S. PRINCESS CHARLOTTE, but it does not appear to have survived.
