100 medals issued of this variety, this example being all the more unusual with the absence of his 23 Year’s service from the engraved edge details.
William Allingham joined the Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. SURLY on 1 October 1824 aged 16 years. Advanced to Petty Of ficer (Sailmaker's Mate) aboard ACHERON in April 1839. After receiving his Pension, Medal and Gratuity in September 1849 aboard SCOUT and seeking civilian employment, he returned two years later to continue service as a pensioner in the R.N. In July 1853 he was rated Admiral's Coxswain, serving a number of different Flag Officers aboard AJAX, CONWAY and HOGUE during the subsequent four years, prior to taking his time ashore in March 1857. A year later he sought service yet again in the R.N., and was accepted, somewhat normally for ageing re-employed pensioners, in the rate of Able Seaman aboard WELLESLEY. He was finally discharged in November 1861 with 32 years servitude.
