Approximately 280 medals were issued between 1922 and 1973. Bellamy qualified for his medal on 1 March 1962, the Dockyard at Hong Kong having been closed in 1961. After the closure of the Naval Base at Hong Kong some of the Dockyard Police were transferred to other British Government Departments in Hong Kong, retaining on a reserved rights basis their previous service. William Bellamy was one such example of an ex-member of the Hong Kong Dockyard Police Force who was subsequently re-employed by the Ministry of Defence.
