John G. Prescott was born in Portsea, Hants on 16 October 1855. He joined the service as Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. DRUID on 6 November 1871, was advanced to A.B. in October 1874, and paid off from DRUID during December l876. He was made Leading Seaman in September 1879 and Petty Officer in February 1881 when aboard H.M.S. GANNET (1879-83).

Whilst aboard H.M.S. CARYSFORT as P.O. 1st Class (Bosun's Mate) from 5 April 1884 to 8 June 1887, he saw service in the Soudan during 1884 and 1885, earning an undated Egyptian medal with Suakin 1885 clasp. He was advanced to the rate of Chief Petty Officer in March 1888 and pensioned in October 1893. Although no mention is made on his papers that he was ever awarded the LS & GC medal, it is noted that his character assessment for his whole career never fell below ‘Very Good’. However, in April 1881, he did lose one Good Conduct Badge which may well have unfairly dashed his chances, or perhaps his divisional officers just forgot to recommend him !
