John Wheeler was born in Newchurch, Southampton on 6 April 1848 and joined the service aboard H.M.S. ST VINCENT on 29 January 1864 as a Boy 2nd Class. His service record was never entered on his “Service Sheet” in the ADM 139 Series for C.S. ratings. He signed a 10 year Continuous Service (C.S.) agreement on 6 April 1866. He was aboard H.M.S. DUKE OF WELLINGTON on 1 January 1873, being drafted to VICTOR EMMANUEL on 21 November 1873, to ENCOUNTER on 3 January 1874, and then to TERROR on 28 May 1876. He was discharged to shore from ROYAL ADELAIDE when his C.S. engagement expired on 24 July 1876, having never risen above the rate of Able Seaman.
