John E. Greenhow was born on 26 May 1845. He first entered as a Naval Cadet aboard H.M.S. BRITANNIA on 7 June 1859, and then joined H.M.S. MARS on 20 December 1859 where he was promoted to Midshipman on 20 March 1861. Appointed direct to H.M.S. ARCHER in February 1863, he received promotion to Sub Lieutenant on 17 September 1864. Served a short period aboard MEANDER and JASEUR where he was “away in a prize” for the period October 1865 to March 1866. He was re-appointed to JASEUR on 11 September 1866, which was also his seniority date as a Lieutenant R.N., remaining aboard JASEUR until September 1871. Served a commission aboard TAMAR (1873-75) earning his Ashantee war medal, followed by one aboard ORONTES (1876-79) earning his Zulu war medal. He was promoted to Commander on 29 January 1880, in which rank he served one commission, aboard H.M.S. DUNCAN (1882-84), prior to being retired on 17 March 1884. He died a year later, on 22 April 1885.
