Only 21 Egypt medals to H.M.S. Chester.

Alfred Jones was born in Cherito, Kent, on 24 October 1855 and joined the service as a Boy 2nd class aboard H.M.S. ST VINCENT on 24 April 1872. He subsequently served aboard VICTOR EMMANUEL as Ord 2nd Class from 21 November 1873, being paid off on 26 June 1874. He served a full seagoing commission aboard VOLAGE (1874-79) as an Ord and Able Seaman, having been advanced to Able Seaman on 1 March 1878. His service papers show him ont he books of ALEXANDRA as an Able Seaman, serving aboard her attendant vessel CHESTER (Tank Vessel), for the period July to November 1882. When his ten year engagement aboard DUKE OF WELLINGTON expired he was discharged to shore as an Able Seaman on 27 November 1883, and was never entitled to the L.S. & G.C. medal.
