John Dunstane (on roll as Dunstance) was born in Plymouth on 7 November 1854 and joined the service as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. INDUS on 9 February 1875. He was drafted to H.M.S. SHAH in November 1876 where he was advanced to Stoker in February 1877, prior to being paid off on 31 October 1879. On 9 February 1882 he was “Discharged Dead” aboard H.M.S. INDUS suffering from phthisis (wasting and gradual loss of body tissue and bulk).
