CONDOR (Lord Charles Beresford) played a distinguished part early in the bombardment when she engaged the Marabout Fort without support, and diverted the enemy’s fire away from the ships that were engaging Fort Mex. Admiral Seymour was moved to send the signal “Well done Condor”.

William Johns was born in Devonport on 1 November 1859. He entered the service aboard H.M.S. CAMBRIDGE (1874-76), and was advanced to Ship's Steward's Assistant in November 1877 whilst aboard ACTIVE (1877-78). He was drafted to CONDOR as an Acting Ship's Steward 3rd Class on 19 April 1882 until March 1884, and was present in CONDOR during the opening stages of the Egyptian Campaign. He next transferred to LION (1884-87) where he became a Ship's Steward 2nd Class in November 1887. He earned his L.S. & G.C. medal as Ship's Steward 2nd Class whilst aboard ROYAL ADELAIDE on 23 January 1888, and advanced to Ship's Steward on 1 July 1889 in which rate he served aboard CARYSFORT (1889-91). He was invalided home from Hong Kong Hospital during March 1895, and discharged from Haslar Hospital and the service on 5 July 1895.
