Alfred Ashby was born in Pimlico, Middlesex, on 24 September 1859. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. FISGARD on 14 May 1875, and drafted to GANGES (1875-77) being advanced to Boy 1st Class in July 1876, then to CRUISER (1877-78) and made Ord during November 1877, and to ALEXANDRA (1878-80) being made an A.B. in October 1879. During service aboard H.M.S. ORION (27 June 1882 to 6 May 1883) he was landed from his ship for service with the Naval Brigade, and took part in the battle of Tel-El-Kebir. Advanced to Yeoman of Stores in April 1883, he next joined ALEXANDRA (1883-85). He was discharged to shore on completion of his ten year engagement on 24 September 1887 and never awarded a Long Service & Good Conduct medal.
