Edward G. Baker was born in Bath, Somerset, during December 1845. He enlisted in the Royal Marines as a Private in Number 4 Company at Woolwich on 22 August 1865, and was transferred to the R.M.A. as a Gunner, Number 10 Company, on 4 February 1865. Subsequently served aboard BRISTOL (1868-70), TOPAZE (1871-73), HIMALAYA (1876-77), HORNET (1877-79). He was drafted to serve with the R.M. Battalion Mediterranean (30 June 1882 to 31 October 1882), landed for service on shore and took part in the various actions at Kassassin and the battle of Tel-El-Kebir. Served his last Commission at sea aboard VICTOR EMMANUEL (1884-86) and was discharged to shore after completing his 21 years on 30 August 1886. Earlier in his career his character assessments had been judged only to be ‘fair’ or ‘good’, hence no L.S. & G.C.
