Charles Dawe was born on 28 April 1852 and entered the service on 6 August 1873 as Assistant Engineer 2nd Class on the books of H.M.S. FISGARD to study at the Royal Naval Engineering College, Devonport. He subsequently served aboard FISGARD (1873-74) where he was promoted to Assistant Engineer 1st Class on 6 August 1875, then joined MALABAR (1876-78) where he was promoted to Engineer on 12 February 1878, and then appointed to IRIS (1876-83) in which ship he served in the Egyptian campaign. He served next aboard CURLEW (1885-89) where he was promoted to Chief Engineer on 22 September 1886. On 22 September 1890 he was promoted to Staff Engineer and whilst serving aboard KATOOMBA (1890-95) he was promoted to Fleet Engineer on 2 September 1894. He was next appointed to MAJESTIC whilst under construction at Portsmouth in 1895 and then joined VIVID (August 1895), for Duties as engineer Overseer at Hull. He became an Engineer Commander when the new rank was introduced in 1894 with his seniority backdated to 22 September 1890. Served aboard HOOD (1901-04) prior to retiring at his own request on 9 May 1905 with rank of Engineer Captain after 32 years service. He died on 19 October 1920.
