George Walsh was born in Southwark, London, on 7 August 1841. He first entered as an Ord aboard H.M.S. PHAETON on 31 August 1861, being advanced to A.B. in October 1862 and remaining there until March 1865. He subsequently served aboard ARETHUSA (1865-67), CUMBERLAND (1867-68), OCEAN (1870-72), GLASGOW (1873-75), DUNCAN (1875-77), TEMERAIRE (1877-80) and PENELOPE (1882). During his service in the latter vessel he took part in the bombardment of Alexandria and was landed for service on shore with the ship's Naval Brigade where he fought at the Battle of Tel-El-Kebir as a crew member of the Naval Armoured Train (see previous lot for roll). He was pensioned to shore on 28 November 1882.
