John Greenwood was born in Leeds on 4 June 1857. He joined the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. EAGLE on 7 July 1873, and was drafted to IMPREGNABLE (1873-74) where he was advanced to Boy 1st Class in July 1874. He subsequently served aboard VALIANT (1875-77) where he was advanced to Ord in January 1877, and made an Able Seaman aboard EURYDICE in September 1877, then to EURYALUS (1879-81) and to BEACON from 7 January 1881 until 30 June 1883, followed by JUMNA from 4 September 1883 until 31 March 1885. He left the service after completing his first ten years on 6 June 1885 and hence did not quality for a L.S. & G.C. award. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve at Portsmouth on 1 February 1904, but was discharged in June 1907 having reached 50 years of age.
