Arthur Crown was born in Hunstanton, Norfolk, on 8 April 1864 and entered the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. PENELOPE on 28 February 1880. He joined HECLA as an Ord on 26 May 1882, was advanced to A.B. on 1 October 1883 and paid off 30 September 1885. He subsequently served aboard POLYPHEMUS (1887-90) where he was advanced to Leading Seaman in November 1888, and to Petty Officer 2nd Class in March 1889. He joined IMMORTALITE as a Petty Officer 1st Class (1892-94), earning his L.S. & G.C. medal aboard her on 20 April 1893, followed by a draft to DRYAD (1895-98) and MEDEA (1899-1900) where he was made an Acting Chief Petty Officer in January 1900, and then AUSTRALIA (1901-02) where he was confirmed as a Chief Petty Officer from 12 January 1902. He was pensioned ashore on 5 April 1902, becoming a member of the Royal Fleet Reserve (No A.538) on 24 May 1902. He was re-entered as a Petty Officer 1st Class (Pensioner) and joined FIRE QUEEN (1904-05) and finally pensioned ashore on 30 April 1905.
