Albert Backhouse was born in June 1859 in Shepton Mallett, and enlisted at Walmer as a Private on 20 August 1877, being transferred to the R.M.A. as a Gunner in Number 5 Company on 28 February 1878. He subsequently served aboard H.M.S. BELLEISLE (1880 to 18 July 1882), and was made a member of the R.M. Battalion Mediterranean (20 August 1882 to 31 October 1882) earning his Egypt Medal with ‘Tel-el-Kebir’ clasp. He was next drafted to the R.M. Battalion Egypt (20 May 1884 to 7 July 1885) to earn his ‘Suakin 1885’ clasp. Whilst aboard CURLEW (1886-87) he purchased his discharge on 1 September 1887, and was never entitled to a L.S. & G.C. medal.
