John Buckley was born in Tralee, Kerry, Ireland, on 20 April 1859. He joined the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. FISGARD on 13 August 1875 and then drafted to IMPREGNABLE (1875-77) where he was advanced to Boy 1st Class in August 1876, and to Ord in April 1877. He subsequently served aboard AGINCOURT (1877-82) being advanced to Able Seaman during July 1878, then to DEE (23 June 1882 to 13 November 1882). During service in the latter vessel he earned his dated Egypt medal without clasp. He served next aboard COCKATRICE (1882-83), and CARYSFORT (10 May 1883 to 14 April 1884) where he earned his ‘Suakin 1884’ and ‘El-Teb’ clasps. He finally served aboard HECTOR (from 10 September 1884) where he was discharged dead due to ‘falling from aloft’ on 3 October 1885. He did not quality for a Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.
