Alfred Byatt was born in Brighton, Sussex, on 27 November 1856. He entered the service, after being an ostler in civilian life, as a Private Royal Marines in No. 20 Company on 27 June 1874. He served in the following ships: HERCULES (1875-77), MALABAR (1877-78), BOSCAWEN (1878-79), LORD WARDEN (1880-82), and HECLA (May 1882 to February 1884) in which he was present at the bombardment of Alexandria in July 1882. He next joined EURYALUS, R.M. Battalion (12 February 1884 to 27 April 1884) and landed from the vessel for service with the Naval Brigade earning a further two campaign clasps. He then returned to HECLA until September 1885, BOSCAWEN (1886-89), ASSISTANCE (1891-93) and finally ST VINCENT (1893-95). He was pensioned to shore on 17 December 1895 and, apart from being sent to cells once in 1884, he had an unblemished career, but still did not earn a Long Service & Good Conduct award.
