Edward Fernee was born in Shoreditch, Middlesex, on 18 June 1857, entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. FISGARD on 8 December 1873, and was drafted to GANGES (1873-75) where he was advanced to Boy 1st Class in December 1874. He subsequently served aboard BLACK PRINCE (1875-78) where he was advanced to Ord in April 1876 and to A.B. in May 1878, SUPERB (1880 to May 1882), MINOTAUR (19 August 1882 to 16 February 1883), and JUMNA (29 December 1883 to 21 April 1884). Service in the latter two ships earned him his Egyptian medal and clasp. He was discharged to shore when his ten-year engagement expired on 15 July 1885, and was not entitled to a Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.
