Charles Underhill was born on 3 November 1856. He entered the service as an Acting Assistant Engineer aboard H.M.S. ASIA on 1 July 1877, and then served aboard HIMALAYA (1878-79) where he was made an Assistant Engineer on 1 July 1878. He subsequently served aboard IRIS (1 September 1883 to 8 March 1887) joining her as an Engineer on the opening day of that Commission, SANS PAREIL (1887-89), CAROLINE (1889-93) achieving the rank of Chief Engineer on 9 August 1890. Whilst aboard ASSISTANCE he was promoted to Staff Engineer on 9 August 1894, and on 9 August 1898 made a Fleet Engineer, a title later changed to Engineer Commander with his seniority back-dated to 9 August 1894. After serving aboard AGINCOURT (1899-1903) he was retired medically unfit as an Engineer Commander on 10 December 1903. He died on 26 February 1926.
