James East was born in Kingstown, Co Dublin, Ireland on 23 March 1858. Entered the service as a Naval Cadet on 15 January 1871 aboard H.M.S. BRITANNIA and was promoted to Midshipman upon leaving her in December 1872. He then served aboard AURORA (1872-74) and RALEIGH (1874-77) receiving promotion to Sub Lieutenant on 23 March 1877. Whilst aboard ALERT (1878-82) he was promoted to Lieutenant to date from 23 June 1880, and for this Egyptian award served aboard MYRMIDON (10 January 1884 until 2 June 1885), followed by BELLEISLE (1885-87) and THALIA (1888-89). He died whilst on active service on 24 January 1890.
